Resumen:	Este libro tiene como objetivo describir y analizar la forma en que Steinbeck aprendió el oficio de escribir. Comienza con su inmersión en el cuento, algunos años después de que dejara de asistir a la Universidad de Stanford. Aparte de una floja primera novela, su carrera profesional como escritor comenzó con la publicación en 1932 de Los pastos del cielo, historias ambientadas en el Valle de Salinas y dedicadas a sus padres. A partir de ese libro escribió historias verdaderamente imponentes como The Red Pony. Entremezclada con el periodismo de Steinbeck sobre las dificultades laborales de California, su habilidad como escritor le llevó a sus obras maestras de 1930, Of Mice and Men, In Dubious Battle y The Grapes of Wrath. Esta última novela, ganadora del Premio Pulitzer de ficción en 1940, le valió finalmente el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1962. Continuó produciendo obras tan amplias como La perla, Al este del Edén, El invierno de nuestro descontento y Viaja con Charley hasta unos meses antes de su muerte en 1968.
