Este libro explora cómo los textos literarios imaginan Inglaterra y responden a los discursos y concepciones de lo inglés y la nación inglesa, especialmente en relación con el género y el idioma. Los ensayos analizan textos del siglo XV al XX y dan testimonio de las visiones cambiantes de Inglaterra y los ingleses, destacando la importancia de la religión, la economía, el paisaje, el espectro del "otro" y el lenguaje en este discurso. El volumen presta atención a la reflexión de las escritoras sobre la nación y los roles que desempeñan las figuras femeninas en las visiones de la nación de los escritores masculinos.
