| Resumen: |
This doctoral research aims to identify and understand the conceptions held by students and faculty regarding human diversity at the Del Valle and Tezonco campuses of the Autonomous University of Mexico City. Following a descriptive qualitative research methodology, interviews, group discussions, and associative letters were used as instruments to collect data. A plurality of conceptions surrounding the concept of human diversity was evident, the polysemic nature of which cannot be reduced to an immediate definition or even a single semantic field. In general, it was associated with the words culture, differences, love, and respect. Thus, human diversity constitutes a broad and complex field that encompasses multiple meanings, dimensions, and categories of analysis, which allow us to understand not only its richness but also its constitutive character of humanity. For the participants, diversity unfolds as a lived experience that challenges institutional practices from multiple scenarios. It is concluded that even though the university is a universe without diversity, the voices of faculty and students enhance diversity and recognition of others and of the other. Furthermore, diversity is expressed both in individual particularities and in the capacity for creation, care, and adaptation, which are traits that differentiate us and, at the same time, unite us as a species. Being human is understood not only through the capacity to produce tools or symbols, but also through sustaining others and educating ourselves in the very act of respect and recognition of differences. |
