En Occidente, la esclavitud humana sigue siendo sinónimo de trata de esclavos en el Atlántico. Pero los grandes sistemas esclavistas en África y Asia fueron anteriores, coexistieron y se superpusieron al sistema atlántico, y han persistido en formas modificadas hasta bien entrado el siglo XXI, planteando importantes amenazas a la estabilidad política y económica dentro de esas regiones y en todo el mundo. Este manual examina las profundas raíces históricas del trabajo no libre en África y Asia junto con sus manifestaciones contemporáneas. Se necesita una perspectiva innovadora de larga duración para vincular lo local y lo global, el pasado y el presente. Los autores rastrean formas cambiantes de trabajo forzoso en la región desde alrededor de 1800, conectando crisis puntuales como crisis ambientales, conflictos, inestabilidad del mercado y malas cosechas con amenazas a la seguridad humana como el empobrecimiento, la violencia, la migración, el secuestro y la esclavitud. En conjunto, estos capítulos iluminan las dimensiones históricas y contemporáneas de la servidumbre en África y Asia, con importantes implicaciones para la lucha contra la servidumbre y la trata de personas en la actualidad. |
