Este libro describe los problemas y desafíos que encontraron los médicos en el manejo de pacientes mayores en estado crítico durante la pandemia de Covid-19 y ofrece información práctica sobre cómo manejarlos. Los adultos mayores son más susceptibles a complicaciones como el síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda (SDRA) como resultado de la neumonía viral. Además, suelen tener múltiples comorbilidades y suelen ser frágiles, lo que significa que sus diversos órganos y sistemas, como el sistema respiratorio, tienen reservas funcionales reducidas. Como tal, los adultos mayores son menos capaces de reaccionar ante factores estresantes agudos. Durante la actual pandemia de Covid-19, la mortalidad de los pacientes adultos mayores aumenta. Además, las tasas de infección y muerte de personas mayores en residencias de ancianos e instituciones de atención sanitaria son elevadas. El manejo de adultos mayores con Covid es complicado. La reducida disponibilidad de camas puede limitar su acceso a la UCI. Además, el pronóstico puede ser malo y las estrategias de ventilación y manejo de las vías respiratorias deben tener en cuenta diversas características clínicas y fisiológicas específicas de los pacientes mayores. Este libro está dirigido a todos los profesionales aliados involucrados en el manejo de pacientes mayores en estado crítico y presenta información recopilada y lecciones prácticas aprendidas del manejo clínico diario de esta población durante la pandemia. . |
