El nuevo coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) ha provocado una grave pandemia mundial en apenas ocho meses. Casi todos los países y territorios del mundo se han visto afectados por el virus. La virulencia y la tasa de infección del virus son profundas y han requerido medidas extremas de distanciamiento social en todo el mundo para evitar que los servicios de salud y los hospitales se abrumen. El COVID-19 parece tener mayores efectos en las personas de edad avanzada y en quienes padecen enfermedades comórbidas, como enfermedades cardíacas, asma y diabetes. A medida que el pico comienza a disminuir en muchos países, las tasas de mortalidad siguen siendo altas en medio de temores justificados de una segunda ola. Ha comenzado una rápida movilización mundial para identificar tratamientos eficaces y desarrollar vacunas. Este nuevo volumen aumentará la comprensión de los lectores sobre la actual pandemia de COVID-19 a través de una serie de capítulos que abordan estas preocupaciones. Los principales expertos discutirán los efectos del virus en casos de comorbilidades, nuevos enfoques de tratamiento, aspectos de salud mental de la pandemia y transmitirán los resultados de las encuestas.
