Este libro examina las conexiones entre el Imperio Británico y el colonialismo francés en la guerra, la paz y las diversas etapas de cooperación competitiva entre ellos, en las que los dos imperios eran a menudo frères ennemis. Sostiene que de maneras cruciales los imperios coloniales británico y francés se influyeron mutuamente. Los capítulos del volumen consideran las conexiones de los dos imperios en África del Norte, Occidental y Central, así como su entrelazamiento en el mar Mediterráneo, el Golfo Pérsico y el Mar de China Meridional. También se analiza su compromiso mutuo con el Islam tanto en el Hajj como en varias revueltas coloniales de influencia religiosa, sus sistemas de administración mutuamente informados en las Nuevas Hébridas y en general, y las formas interconectadas en que los dos imperios lucharon en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la descolonización.
