Este libro analiza las muchas amenazas a la democracia que existen en el siglo XXI y trata de comprender cómo la democracia puede sobrevivir a las crisis económicas, sociales y políticas. Se centra en cuestiones de oligarquía, tiranía, totalitarismo y oclocracia. Se analiza cómo estas formas de gobernanza se manifestaron en los mundos antiguo y medieval, y cómo las transiciones socioeconómicas del siglo XXI han creado condiciones que plantean cada vez más amenazas similares a la democracia moderna. El autor analiza transiciones amplias en el mundo contemporáneo: transición económica hacia un capitalismo avanzado y de alta tecnología; transición cultural de valores religiosos y familiares tradicionales a normas centradas en la igualdad racial, la igualdad y liberación de género y transgénero, y el multiculturalismo; también, la transición de la cosmovisión religiosa tradicional a la cosmovisión científico-racional, y de la moral religiosa a la ética humanista secular. Estos, en conjunto, sustentan la transición política de la autoridad tradicional, que involucra la monarquía y la aristocracia, a la autoridad legal racional, que involucra el derecho constitucional y la participación democrática. El libro muestra, a través de extensos debates nacionales, que siempre que estas transiciones se vuelven difíciles, pueden surgir formas antidemocráticas de gobernanza que anulan la democracia. Escrito por un experto en el campo, este libro aborda un tema especialmente actual en el mundo contemporáneo y es de interés para un amplio número de lectores de las ciencias sociales, desde investigadores y estudiantes hasta personas no profesionales exigentes. |
