Se caracteriza por una población mayoritariamente rural, un envejecimiento demográfico y una economía históricamente deprimida. Sin embargo, la región ha experimentado recientemente un aumento significativo de la inmigración, una inversión de la tendencia históricamente pronunciada de emigración de la región. Para comprender la inmigración en sus primeras etapas, este libro adopta un enfoque histórico que se centra en diversidades que van más allá de la nacionalidad. Explora fenómenos locales pero internacionales, como diferentes patrones de migración de retorno, relaciones comunitarias y familiares transnacionales y mercados laborales especializados. El libro adopta una perspectiva interdisciplinaria amplia, basándose en la sociología, la antropología, la historia, la sociolingüística, la literatura y la educación, para proporcionar un análisis detallado de un estudio de caso. Si bien el caso es específico, muchas otras regiones geográficas compartirán algunos de los factores que explora el libro.
