Este volumen explora los desafíos de sostener la investigación ecológica a largo plazo a través de un análisis histórico del Programa de Investigación Ecológica a Largo Plazo creado por la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias de EE. UU. en 1980. El libro examina las razones para la creación del Programa, una descripción general de sus 40- historia del año y análisis histórico en profundidad de sitios seleccionados. Los temas explorados incluyen el impacto más amplio de este programa en la sociedad, incluida su relevancia para la política ambiental y la comprensión del cambio climático global, el desafío de extender la ecología de los ecosistemas a entornos urbanos y vínculos con proyectos de artes creativas y humanidades. Un tema importante es la evolución de un nuevo tipo de ciencia en red, que involucra estudios comparativos, innovación en la gestión de la información, creación de marcos socioecológicos, desarrollo de estructuras de gobernanza y formación de una Red Internacional de Investigación Ecológica a Largo Plazo con alcance mundial.
