Este libro explora cómo se recuerda el período socialmente disputado de la Guerra Fría en las aulas de historia actuales. Aplicando un conjunto diverso de estrategias metodológicas, los autores trazan las líneas divisorias en y entre las culturas de la memoria en todo el mundo, prestando especial atención al impacto que la era de nuestro presente impulsada por la crisis tiene en las imágenes del pasado. Los autores que analizan los medios educativos señalan ambivalencia, vaguedad y contradicciones en las narrativas de los libros de texto, entendidas como ecos de controversias sociales y académicas. Otros se centran en los profesores y el aula de historia, mostrando cómo las cuestiones políticas no resueltas crean tensiones en la educación histórica. Hacen visible cómo los profesores luchan por afrontar estos desafíos pretendiendo que lo que hacen es "sólo historia". Al concebir tanto el populismo triunfante como las crecientes demandas de autenticidad como expresiones de crisis, el volumen busca satisfacer la necesidad de examinar más de cerca los anhelos de orientación en un mundo globalizado que a menudo se asocia con rápidos cambios sociales y la desaparición de viejas certezas. . Partiendo del supuesto de que los medios desempeñan un papel crucial en los discursos populistas de autenticidad, el volumen va más allá de los medios convencionales y sociales al ampliar su enfoque a los medios en la educación formal, en particular los libros de texto y los planes de estudio escolares. Estos dos formatos mediáticos concretos moldean de forma duradera a las generaciones más jóvenes y, con ello, al futuro. El volumen propuesto adopta perspectivas globales de tres países poscoloniales que a menudo están más allá del alcance de los estudios que abordan los discursos populistas y los enredos de los medios, ideas que aportan nuevos aspectos a los debates académicos internacionales.
