Resumen:	Este libro parte de una primera observación general: existen formas muy diversas de enmarcar y transmitir el conocimiento científico en los textos. Luego analiza textos sobre matemáticas, astronomía, medicina y ciencias de la vida, producidos en varias partes del mundo y en diferentes períodos de tiempo, y examina las razones detrás de la segmentación de los textos y las consecuencias de tales divisiones textuales. ¿Cómo pueden los historiadores y filósofos de la ciencia abordar esta diversidad y qué está en juego al abordarla? El libro aborda estas cuestiones, adoptando un enfoque específico para ello. Para arrojar luz sobre la diversidad de patrones organizativos y estrategias retóricas en los textos científicos, y para cuestionar la lógica detrás de las decisiones tomadas para presentar dichos textos de una manera particular, se centra en la cuestión de la segmentación del texto, ofreciendo respuestas a preguntas como como: ¿Por qué fue el significado de segmentar los textos en párrafos, capítulos, secciones y grupos? ¿Se utilizó la segmentación para delimitar unidades autónomas, o para marcar rupturas en la apariencia física de un texto con el fin de ayudar a la lectura y la memorización, o para hacer frente a las limitaciones de los soportes materiales? ¿Cómo, en estos diferentes escenarios y en diferentes textos, se hicieron visibles piezas y partes?
