Los ríos son los "vasos sanguíneos" de todos los organismos vivos de la Tierra: viven en el agua, la beben o la utilizan para extenderse a nuevas regiones con el fin de evitar la superpoblación en lugares específicos. Desde los inicios de la vida humana en la Tierra, las riberas de los ríos se han utilizado como lugares de asentamiento, para proporcionar alimentos y para el transporte. Sin embargo, desde las culturas humanas más antiguas, a lo largo de estos ríos también se han extendido muchos agentes de enfermedades. Escrito por destacados parasitólogos y médicos internacionales, este libro analiza la participación de los ríos en la propagación de enfermedades, pero también sus contribuciones al desarrollo y destrucción de las culturas humanas. Al examinar datos pasados y actuales, se muestra cuán importantes y vulnerables son las regiones fluviales y cómo están cada vez más amenazadas por la contaminación. |
