Este libro describe la vida, la época y la ciencia del físico soviético Lev Vasilevich Shubnikov (1901-1937). De 1926 a 1930, Shubnikov trabajó en Leiden, donde fue codescubridor del efecto Shubnikov-De Haas. Después de su regreso a la Unión Soviética, fundó en Jarkov, Ucrania, el primer laboratorio de baja temperatura de la Unión Soviética, que en muy poco tiempo se convirtió en el instituto de física más importante del país y, entre otras cosas, condujo al descubrimiento del tipo II. superconductividad.
