Esta obra es un gran volumen interdisciplinario de ciencias naturales, poderosamente ilustrado, el primero de su tipo que examina la naturaleza críticamente importante de la paradoja ecológica, a través de una gran cantidad de lentes: las ciencias biológicas, la taxonomía, la arqueología, la historia geopolítica, la ética comparada, la literatura, filosofía, historia de la ciencia, geografía humana, ecología de poblaciones, epistemología, antropología, demografía y futurismo. La paradoja ecológica sugiere que la lucha biológica humana (y, desde una perspectiva insular, exitosa) por existir se ha producido al precio de aislar al H. sapiens de los servicios ecosistémicos que sustentan la vida, y a gran parte de la biodiversidad con la que nos encontramos. estamos en situación de crisis.
