Este libro describe el estado del sistema de participación laica en la justicia penal, saiban-in seido, en la sociedad japonesa. Comenzando con descripciones de las líneas generales de la participación laica en el sistema de justicia penal japonés, el libro aborda las cuestiones de qué piensan los participantes laicos sobre el sistema después de su participación, cómo evalúa el público en general el sistema, si la introducción de la participación laica ha promovió la confianza en el sistema de justicia en Japón y los focos de interés de la sociedad japonesa en el sistema de participación laica. Para responder a estas preguntas, el autor utiliza datos obtenidos de encuestas sociales de participantes reales y del público en general. El libro también explora los resultados de análisis cuantitativos de textos de artículos periodísticos. Con esos datos, el autor describe cómo la sociedad japonesa evalúa la implementación del sistema y discute si el sistema promueve los valores democráticos en Japón.
