Este libro explora la historia del orden internacional en los siglos XVIII y XIX a través de un nuevo estudio del Droit des gens (1758) de Emer de Vattel. Basándose en fuentes inéditas de archivos y bibliotecas europeos, el libro ofrece un relato en profundidad de la recepción de la principal obra de Vattel. El enfoque de Vattel en el mito del buen gobierno se convirtió en un fuerte argumento a favor del republicanismo, la supervivencia de los estados pequeños, la redacción de constituciones y proyectos de reforma y la lucha cotidiana por la libertad en diferentes contextos geográficos, lingüísticos y sociales. El libro complica la imagen del éxito y la utilidad duraderos de Vattel, mostrando también cómo se publicó y tradujo el trabajo para criticar y denunciar la peligrosidad de estas ideas. Al hacerlo, abre nuevas vías de investigación más allá de las historias del derecho internacional y del pensamiento político y económico. |
