Los ciclones tropicales en el sur de África, también conocidos como huracanes o tifones en otras regiones del mundo, son un tema candente para la investigación académica. Este enfoque se ha visto magnificado por la necesidad de considerar los ciclones tropicales en el contexto de otras agendas globales de desarrollo, que incluyen la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible y sus inseparables 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), el Acuerdo de París, el Marco de Sendai para el Riesgo de Desastres. Reducción y Nueva Agenda Urbana de Hábitat III. Los ambiciosos ODS desafían a los líderes mundiales y comunitarios a garantizar que el desarrollo aborde el nexo entre la pobreza, la desigualdad y la creación de empleo, así como el cuidado de la Tierra, sus recursos naturales y su biodiversidad. Los ODS presentan además una agenda para erradicar el hambre, brindar educación de calidad y sostener el agua y el saneamiento. También se presentan las agendas de desarrollo de infraestructura, asentamientos humanos, consumo y producción sostenibles, cambio climático, biodiversidad y economía oceánica (azul). Por último, la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible fomenta las asociaciones para ejecutar diversos programas y proyectos en todos los niveles espaciales. Sin embargo, a medida que los ciclones tropicales continúan tocando tierra en múltiples ocasiones y asolando el sur de África y otras partes del mundo, el logro de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible se ve amenazado. Con este fin, este libro aborda esta brecha documentando las implicaciones de los ciclones tropicales, extrayendo ejemplos y estudios de casos de ciclones tropicales recientes, como el ciclón Idai y el ciclón Kenneth, que provocaron impactos catastróficos en 2019. El libro forma parte de una serie con tres volúmenes. Los otros volúmenes incluyen "Ciclones en el sur de África Vol. 1: Interconexión del impacto catastrófico del ciclón Idai con los ODS en Zimbabwe" y "Ciclones en el sur de África Vol. 2: Temas fundamentales y fundacionales".
