| Resumen: |
This article assessed the sustainability of selected native potato production systems in the Sumapaz páramo, Bogotá—an ecologically strategic ecosystem where conservation and agricultural activities coexist in tension. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining the MESMIS and SAFA frameworks through semi-structured surveys, a focus group, and field visits to five producers, in order to evaluate sustainability indicators across four dimensions: environmental, social, economic, and governance. Results revealed an intermediate level of sustainability (global index = 0.424). The environmental dimension was the strongest (0.702), reflecting reduced agrochemical use and crop diversification, while the social (0.327) and economic (0.291) dimensions showed the greatest weaknesses, mainly related to limited generational renewal, low participation of women and youth, and restricted market access. Overall, this study represents an initial contextual approach to assessing the sustainability of native potato production in the Sumapaz region, highlighting its potential as a conservation and livelihood strategy, yet emphasizing the need to strengthen socioeconomic and governance aspects to ensure long-term sustainability. |
