Regarding this issue, the present study aimed to understand the meanings attributed to self-harm. This study examines self-harm in young university students who have survived suicide attempts, exploring the emotions and thoughts that precede it, the processes of emotional recovery, and the triggers that originate it. It was conducted using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, employing semistructured interviews and testimonial narratives with six students from the University of Cauca. The results show that self-harm is configured as an emotional regulation and self-punishment strategy in response to feelings of sadness, emptiness, loneliness, and academic failure. Furthermore, it was identified that recovery processes are mediated by the construction of meaning in life, the support of significant relationships, and the incorporation of protective practices, particularly sports and the arts. The conclusion highlights the need to address self-harm in university students from a comprehensive perspective that considers emotional, contextual, and cultural factors, promoting prevention, support, and resilience strategies within the academic setting.
