| Resumen: |
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases and a growing threat to public health. In Colombia, its prevalence is increasing along with factors such as obesity and sedentary lifestyles. A diet rich in antioxidants, such as those found in tree tomatoes and papaya, could help lower blood sugar levels. Materials and methods: Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were evaluated in 33 medical students at the University of Manizales, 24 women and 9 men, aged between 18 and 35 years, excluding subjects diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The study was approved by the Institutional Bioethics Committee (CBE01_2023). A survey of eating habits was conducted, and blood and urine samples were taken before and after consumption of tree
tomato and papaya juice. Blood glucose and polyphenol levels were quantified by spectrophotometry. |
