Entre los invertebrados marinos de aguas profundas, los picnogónidos y los crustáceos representan los grupos de especies más diversos y de importancia ecológica. Sin embargo, ambos todavía no se comprenden bien. Las operaciones de muestreo y exploración frente a las costas occidental y oriental de las Américas han aumentado significativamente en las últimas dos décadas. Sin embargo, estas operaciones son muy costosas y limitadas en número y frecuencia. En países como Brasil, Canadá, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, México, Perú, Estados Unidos de América y El Salvador se ha hecho un gran esfuerzo por explorar los recursos de las profundidades marinas y la rica diversidad de las comunidades, dando como resultado una mejor comprensión de los ecosistemas naturales de ambas costas de América. Se han estudiado intensamente los picnogónidos y muchos grupos de crustáceos de aguas profundas, desde los animales más pequeños, como los casi desconocidos copépodos bentónicos, hasta los decápodos más grandes.
