Basándose en una combinación de análisis del discurso de los documentos políticos de la UE y evidencia de encuestas de opinión que muestran "lo que la gente quiere", el libro muestra que la política de la UE fracasa porque la UE promueve una concepción de la democracia que la gente no comparte. Del mismo modo, las estrategias de la UE para el desarrollo económico están equivocadas porque no reflejan las preferencias de la gente por una mayor justicia social y una reducción de las desigualdades. Este doble fracaso pone de relieve una paradoja de la promoción de la democracia en la UE: si bien es nominalmente emancipadora, de facto socava las mismas transiciones a la democracia y al desarrollo inclusivo que pretende lograr. Drawing on a combination of discourse analysis of EU policy documents and evidence from opinion polls showing 'what the people want', the book shows EU policy fails because the EU promotes a conception of democracy which people do not share. Likewise, the EU's strategies for economic development are misconceived because they do not reflect the people's preferences for greater social justice and reducing inequalities. This double failure highlights a paradox of EU democracy promotion: while nominally emancipatory, it de facto undermines the very transitions to democracy and inclusive development it aims to pursue. The editors and contributors present dynamic and relational perspectives on the status of and historical processes involved in the creation and absorption of minority groups within Jordan.
