Los tumores que afectan a los nervios periféricos pueden ser lesiones extremadamente difíciles de diagnosticar y tratar. Para optimizar su manejo, los médicos deben tener un conocimiento profundo de la anatomía y patología de los nervios periféricos (tanto macroscópica como microscópica), así como estar familiarizados con las técnicas microquirúrgicas y el registro neurofisiológico intraoperatorio. Este compendio aborda todos los aspectos de los tumores que afectan a los nervios periféricos, desde el diagnóstico hasta el tratamiento; los temas que aborda van desde epidemiología, anatomía, fisiología, patología y diagnóstico clínico hasta electrofisiología, imágenes y aspectos genéticos/citomoleculares. Se describen en detalle los abordajes quirúrgicos, biopsias y resección de diversas lesiones benignas, malignas y pseudotumorales, tumores de plexo (tanto braquiales como lumbosacros) y modalidades de tratamiento complementario y problemas relacionados con el dolor. El libro está dirigido no sólo a neurocirujanos, cirujanos de la mano, cirujanos plásticos y ortopédicos nuevos en este campo, sino también a especialistas experimentados que deseen actualizar sus conocimientos con nuevos conocimientos basados en material clínico y experimental sólido. Tumors involving peripheral nerves may be extremely challenging lesions to diagnose and treat. In order to optimize their management, physicians should have a thorough knowledge of peripheral nerve anatomy and pathology (both gross and microscopic), as well as familiarity with microsurgical techniques and intraoperative neurophysiological recording. This compendium deals with all aspects of tumors affecting peripheral nerves, from diagnosis to treatment; the topics it addresses range from epidemiology, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical diagnosis to electrophysiology, imaging, genetic/cytomolecular aspects. Surgical approaches, biopsies and resection of various benign, malignant and pseudo-tumoral lesions, plexus tumors (both brachial and lumbosacral), and adjunctive treatment modalities and pain-related issues are described in detail. The book is intended not only for neurosurgeons, hand surgeons, plastic and orthopedic surgeons new to the field, but also for seasoned specialists who wish to update their knowledge with new insights based on robust experimental and clinical material.
