Este libro se ha definido en torno a tres cuestiones importantes: la primera arroja luz sobre cómo las personas, en diversos contextos filosóficos, religiosos y polÃticos, entienden el entorno natural y cómo se percibe la relación entre el entorno y el cuerpo; el segundo se centra en las percepciones de que un entorno natural particular es bueno o malo para la salud humana y examina las razones detrás de tales caracterizaciones; el tercero examina la promoción, en la historia, de prácticas especÃficas para aprovechar los beneficios para la salud, o evitar los daños, causados ​​por ciertos entornos y también los esfuerzos realizados para cambiar entornos supuestamente nocivos para la salud humana. El sentimiento y/o la observación de que el entorno natural puede tener efectos sobre la salud humana han sido y siguen siendo comúnmente compartidos en todo el mundo. Esto nos llevó a plantear la cuestión de los vÃnculos observados y que se cree que existen entre los seres humanos y el medio natural en un marco cronológico y geográfico amplio. En esta investigación, llevamos al lector desde la China antigua y tardÃa imperial hasta el mundo árabe medieval y la Europa medieval, moderna y contemporánea. Este libro no examina estas relaciones a través del prisma del conocimiento de nuestra experiencia europea contemporánea, que, todavÃa con demasiada frecuencia, conduce a la sensación de mundos totalmente diferentes. Más bien, cuestiona a los protagonistas que, en diferentes épocas y lugares, han reflexionado, en sus propios términos, sobre los vÃnculos entre el medio ambiente y la salud y trata de obtener una mejor comprensión de por qué estos vÃnculos tomaron la forma que tomaron en estos contextos precisos. .
