El siglo XIX fue testigo de una proliferación de corrientes y prácticas religiosas alternativas, que se apropiaron de tradiciones anteriores, entrelazaron discursos espirituales geográficamente distintos y crearon un depósito de paisajes mentales eminentemente adecuados para ser acogidos por generaciones posteriores de pensadores y practicantes. Escrito por especialistas en el campo, este volumen examina temas y figuras importantes relacionados con esta amalgama oculta y su resonancia en el siglo XX y más allá. Se abordan de diversas formas las formas globales de lo oculto, que van desde América y Europa hasta la India, con especial atención al papel crucial del mesmerismo y los orígenes del yoga moderno.
