Desde el trabajo pionero del naturalista danés Peter Lund en el siglo XIX hasta la reciente investigación sobre la dispersión de los primeros humanos en América del Sur, dirigida por Walter A. Neves y sus colegas, Lagoa Santa ha ofrecido hallazgos notables, las colecciones más grandes de humanos primitivos esqueletos en las Américas, y ha contribuido a las discusiones generales sobre la colonización de las Américas. Este volumen editado tiene como objetivo llenar la falta de publicaciones en inglés sobre Lagoa Santa y reunir a representantes de todas las principales instituciones brasileñas directamente involucradas en las investigaciones arqueológicas y paleontológicas en la región, con el fin de brindar a la comunidad científica internacional un relato amplio y completo de las investigaciones que contribuyeron a reescribir la historia del poblamiento de América. El libro está organizado en dos partes. El primero consta de capítulos que describen cada una de las intervenciones en la región, comenzando con el trabajo pionero de Peter Lund y culminando con la última intervención liderada por Walter A. Neves y su equipo. La segunda parte del libro consta de revisiones de focos de investigación relevantes actuales en la región, como migraciones, salud, rituales mortuorios, paleontología, arte rupestre, tecnología y geoarqueología.
