Muestra que las solidaridades y polaridades creadas por las disputas sobre el alcohol se basan en argumentos mucho más complejos que las oposiciones basadas únicamente en la religión o el consumo. En una región en la que el alcohol está prohibido por las normas islámicas, pero permite su producción y consumo, el alcohol siempre ha sido polémico. Sin embargo, este volumen examina las diferentes formas de autoridad social (religiosa, cultural y política) para ofrecer una nueva comprensión de las conductas relacionadas con el consumo de alcohol en Oriente Medio y el Norte de África. Sugiere que el alcohol, al ser al mismo tiempo una importación y un producto de la industria local, personifica las tensiones inherentes a la adaptación de las sociedades islámicas a las tendencias globales, que buscan redefinir las comunidades políticas, las jerarquías sociales y los roles de género. Los capítulos cuestionan conceptos erróneos comunes sobre el alcohol en esta región, argumentando en cambio que los discursos médicos sobre la dependencia del alcohol ocultan posturas sobre la independencia nacional en un contexto imperialista; que el enfoque en la religión también tiende a ocultar las disputas sobre el alcohol como una lucha social; y que las disputas sobre la embriaguez tienen más que ver con la masculinidad que con juzgar el ocio privado. Al hacerlo, el volumen presenta el alcohol como una forma de captar las relaciones de poder que estructuran las sociedades de Oriente Medio y el Magreb. It shows that the solidarities and polarities created by disputes over alcohol are built on arguments far more complex than oppositions on religion or consumption alone. In a region in which alcohol is banned by Islamic rules, yet allows its production and consumption, alcohol has always been contentious. However, this volume examines the different forms of social authority – religious, cultural and political – to offer a new understanding of drinking behaviours in the Middle East and North Africa. It suggests that alcohol, being at the same time an import and product of local industry, epitomises the tensions inherent to the conforming of Islamic societies to global trends, which seek to redefine political communities, social hierarchies and gender roles. The chapters challenge common misconceptions about alcohol in this region, arguing instead that medical discourses on alcohol dependency hide stances on national independence in an imperialist context; that the focus on religion also tends to conceal disputes on alcohol as a social struggle; and that disputes on inebriation are more about masculinity than judging private leisure. In doing so, the volume presents alcohol as a way of grasping the power relations that structure the societies of the Middle East and Maghreb.
