Como exploración del orden político moderno y su genealogía racial, surge en un momento en el que académicos y activistas luchan por entender la formación del sujeto desde la perspectiva de los modos de pensamiento sociales y filosóficos subordinados, más que desde los dominantes. Para Sawyer, estudiar la formación de sujetos racializados requiere una nueva imaginación de los sujetos marginados. La subjetividad negra no se ve desde imaginaciones estáticas de muerte social, alienación, abyección continua o como una confrontación con el regalo del olvido.
