Este libro examina las intersecciones entre las formas en que el matrimonio era representado en la escritura y el arte del siglo XVIII, experimentado en la sociedad y regulado por la ley. Los ensayos interdisciplinarios y comparativos exploran la experiencia matrimonial más allá de la "barrera matrimonial" para abarcar representaciones de la vida matrimonial, incluidas cuestiones de abuso conyugal, paternidad, incesto, infidelidad y el período posterior al fin del matrimonio, para incluir la anulación, la viudez y el divorcio.
