El libro se basa en la experiencia y las colaboraciones de investigación internacionales forjadas por el Grupo Global de Ãfrica de la Red Mundial de Universidades para abordar de manera crÃtica la intersección, en teorÃa y práctica, de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) y las agendas y necesidades de desarrollo de Ãfrica. Además, sostiene que –y demuestra cómo– los ODS deben entenderse como un plan de desarrollo aspiracional con múltiples significados que se sitúan en terrenos dinámicos y disputados. Dado que los ODS tienen implicaciones sustanciales para las polÃticas de desarrollo y los recursos tanto a nivel macro como micro, su relevancia no sólo depende de un contexto especÃfico, sino que también debe evaluarse en términos de las aspiraciones y necesidades de los ciudadanos comunes en todo el continente. Basándose en análisis y evidencia de las ciencias naturales y sociales, el libro demuestra que el progreso hacia los ODS debe satisfacer las demandas de mejorar el bienestar humano en condiciones socioeconómicas, polÃticas y ambientales diversas y desafiantes. Los ejemplos incluyen aquellos de la industria minera, la salud pública, el empleo y los medios de comunicación. Para terminar, destaca cómo la colaboración internacional en forma de redes de investigación puede mejorar la producción de conocimientos crÃticos y el compromiso con los ODS en Ãfrica. |

The book draws upon the expertise and international research collaborations forged by the Worldwide Universities Network Global Africa Group to critically engage with the intersection, in theory and practice, of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa's development agendas and needs. Further, it argues that – and demonstrates how – the SDGs should be understood as an aspirational blueprint for development with multiple meanings that are situated in dynamic and contested terrains. As the SDGs have substantial implications for development policy and resourcing at both the macro and micro levels, their relevance is not only context-specific but should also be assessed in terms of the aspirations and needs of ordinary citizens across the continent. Drawing on analyses and evidence from both the natural and social sciences, the book demonstrates that progress towards the SDGs must meet demands for improving human well-being under diverse and challenging socio-economic, political and environmental conditions. Examples include those from the mining industry, public health, employment and the media. In closing, it highlights how international collaboration in the form of research networks can enhance the production of critical knowledge on and engagement with the SDGs in Africa. |
