Este libro de acceso abierto, basado en investigaciones iniciadas por académicos del Centro Leiden-Delft-Erasmus para el Patrimonio y el Desarrollo Global (CHGD) y ICOMOS Países Bajos, presenta una investigación multidisciplinaria que conecta el agua con el patrimonio. A lo largo de veintiún capítulos explora paisajes, ciudades, estructuras de ingeniería y edificios de todo el mundo. Describe cómo las personas han moldeado activamente el curso, la forma y la función del agua para los asentamientos humanos y el desarrollo de las civilizaciones, estableciendo estructuras, políticas y culturas socioeconómicas; un rico mundo de narrativas, leyes y prácticas; y una extensa red de infraestructuras, edificios y formas urbanas. El libro está organizado en cinco secciones temáticas que vinculan prácticas del pasado con el diseño del presente y visiones del futuro: la parte I analiza la gestión del agua potable; la parte II aborda el uso del agua en la agricultura; la parte III explora la gestión del agua para la recuperación y defensa de tierras; la parte IV examina la planificación fluvial y costera; y la parte V se centra en las ciudades portuarias y la regeneración de las zonas costeras. Hoy en día, los muchos sistemas complejos del pasado son necesariamente la base de nuevos sistemas que preservan el pasado y gestionan el agua hoy: los formuladores de políticas y los diseñadores pueden trabajar juntos para reconocer y aprovechar los conocimientos y habilidades tradicionales que encarna la antigua estructura. Este libro sostiene que existe la necesidad de una agenda común y una política integrada que aborde la preservación, transformación y reutilización adaptativa de estructuras históricas relacionadas con el agua.
