El libro examina los desafÃos actuales a la libertad académica en Europa, centrándose principalmente en Italia y Alemania. Los casos analizados demuestran que la investigación y la enseñanza están bajo presión en las democracias europeas: en HungrÃa y Polonia debido a limitaciones polÃticas, en otros paÃses debido a las expectativas sociales. Teniendo en cuenta diferentes aspectos interrelacionados, las cuatro partes del libro exploran muchas amenazas reales y potenciales a las universidades, instituciones cientÃficas e investigadores, que van desde la dimensión europea de la libertad de las artes y las ciencias hasta el análisis comparativo de los desafÃos emergentes a la libertad académica en el contexto de la pandemia de COVID-19. Destacan las amenazas a la autonomÃa universitaria provenientes de la orientación económica de la gobernanza universitaria, que enfatiza la eficiencia, la competencia y la evaluación externa, y de las nuevas reglas relativas a las advertencias de activación, las restricciones de expresión y las comisiones de ética. El estudio detallado de estas complejas amenazas pretende estimular la reflexión académica y suscitar un debate serio a nivel europeo y nacional. El volumen contribuye a la búsqueda de un nuevo papel de las universidades e instituciones cientÃficas y está dirigido a académicos y actores polÃticos. The cases discussed demonstrate that research and teaching are under pressure in European democracies: in Hungary and Poland due to political constraints, in other countries due to societal expectations. Considering different interrelated aspects, the four parts of the book explore many real and potential threats to universities, scientific institutions and researchers, ranging from the European dimension of freedom of the arts and sciences to comparative analysis of emerging challenges to academic freedom against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. They highlight threats to university autonomy from the economic orientation of university governance, which emphasizes efficiency, competition, and external evaluation, and from new rules concerning trigger warnings, speech restrictions, and ethics commissions. Detailed study of these complex threats is intended to stimulate scholarly reflection and elicit serious discussion at European and national level. The volume contributes to the search for a new role of universities and scientific institutions and is addressed to academics and political stakeholders.
