Lo hará analizando esta conexión (más visiblemente a través del nacionalismo y el capitalismo global) desde sus orígenes en el período moderno temprano hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial. ¿Qué tan separado está el desarrollo del turismo arqueológico del de la formación de la arqueología como disciplina? ¿Y los campos operan en dos mundos diferentes? Las discusiones académicas los han tratado en gran medida como campos distintos sin conexión. Las historias de la arqueología, en particular, han centrado su atención en aspectos como la historia de los descubrimientos arqueológicos, el pensamiento arqueológico y, más recientemente, la relación política entre la arqueología y el nacionalismo y otras ideologías. En todos estos relatos ha faltado en gran medida un examen de cómo la arqueología se ha insertado en la sociedad, por ejemplo a través de algo que todos los humanos disfrutan –el ocio– en forma de turismo arqueológico. Además, así como las historias de la arqueología han ignorado en gran medida la conexión entre arqueología y turismo, también lo ha hecho el turismo en la dirección inversa. Estudios recientes sobre turismo se han centrado en temas como la economía (turismo sostenible y de recesión) y nuevos tipos de turismo (incluido el ecoturismo y el turismo médico). It will do so by looking at this connection – most visibly through nationalism and global capitalism - from the its origins in the early modern period until World ar II. How separate is the development of archaeological tourism from that of the formation of archaeology as a discipline? And do the fields operate in two different worlds? Scholarly discussions have largely treated them as distinct fields with no connection. Histories of archaeology, in particular, have focused their attention on aspects such as the history of archaeological discoveries, archaeological thought and, more recently, the political relationship between archaeology and nationalism and other ideologies. Largely missing from all these accounts has been an examination of how archaeology has been inserted into society, for example through something that all humans enjoy – leisure – in the form of archaeological tourism. Moreover, just as histories of archaeology have largely ignored the connection between archaeology and tourism so, too has tourism in the reverse direction. Recent studies on tourism have centered on topics such as economy (sustainable and recession tourism) and new types of tourism (including ecotourism and medical tourism).
