Este libro ofrece ideas sobre el estudio del lenguaje natural como un sistema adaptativo complejo. Analiza una nueva forma de abordar el problema del modelado del lenguaje y proporciona pistas sobre cómo la estrecha relación entre el lenguaje natural y algunas estructuras biológicas puede resultar muy fructífera para la ciencia. El libro examina el marco teórico y luego aplica sus principios fundamentales a diversas áreas de la lingüística. Analiza las aplicaciones en el contacto lingüístico, el cambio lingüístico, la lingüística diacrónica y la posible mejora de los enfoques clásicos de la lingüística histórica mediante nuevas metodologías utilizadas en la física, la biología y la teoría de sistemas de agentes. Muestra cómo estudiar la evolución y el cambio del lenguaje mediante simulaciones computacionales permite integrar estructuras sociales en la evolución del lenguaje, y cómo esto puede dar lugar a una nueva forma de abordar la sociolingüística. Finalmente, explora aplicaciones para el análisis del discurso, la semántica y la cognición. |

This book offers insights on the study of natural language as a complex adaptive system. It discusses a new way to tackle the problem of language modeling, and provides clues on how the close relation between natural language and some biological structures can be very fruitful for science. The book examines the theoretical framework and then applies its main principles to various areas of linguistics. It discusses applications in language contact, language change, diachronic linguistics, and the potential enhancement of classical approaches to historical linguistics by means of new methodologies used in physics, biology, and agent systems theory. It shows how studying language evolution and change using computational simulations enables to integrate social structures in the evolution of language, and how this can give rise to a new way to approach sociolinguistics. Finally, it explores applications for discourse analysis, semantics and cognition. |
