Este libro presenta un enfoque de vanguardia para el estudio de las adaptaciones cinematográficas de la literatura para niños y jóvenes, y las narrativas sobre la infancia que dichas adaptaciones representan. Históricamente, los medios cinematográficos siempre han tenido una preferencia por la adaptación de textos literarios "clásicos" para niños. Como productos económicos y culturales, McCallum señala cómo dichas adaptaciones cinematográficas desempeñan un papel crucial en la reproducción y transformación cultural de la infancia y la juventud, y de hecho son un rico recurso para el examen de los valores e ideologÃas culturales cambiantes, particularmente en torno a las narrativas controvertidas de la infancia. Los capÃtulos examinan varias representaciones de la infancia: como estados cambiantes de inocencia y salvajismo, liminalidad, marginalización e invisibilidad.
