Este libro considera el concepto de resiliencia en una sociedad global donde hacer frente a las consecuencias y el impacto a largo plazo de las crisis y los desastres desafÃa la capacidad de las comunidades para recuperarse en caso de una perturbación grave. Eventos catastróficos como el ataque terrorista del 11 de septiembre, el desastre nuclear de Fukushima y la erupción del volcán en Java Central provocaron una devastación masiva en las infraestructuras fÃsicas y causaron importantes daños sociales y económicos. Este libro considera cómo el sistema sociotecnológico moderno que facilita la actividad humana define cómo sobreviven las sociedades y si una crisis será breve o prolongada.
