Este libro analiza la importancia del corresponsal especial como un nuevo rol periodÃstico en la cultura impresa victoriana, dentro del contexto de la evolución de la prensa periódica, a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Al examinar el reportaje gráfico producido por la primera generación de estos periodistas pioneros, a través de una serie de estudios de casos temáticos, considera a los corresponsales individuales y sus historias, y las formas en que contribuyeron y fueron moldeados por el panorama mediático más amplio. Si bien comúnmente se los asociaba con el reportaje de guerra, los corresponsales especiales tenÃan en realidad la tarea de hacer crónicas rutinarias de todo tipo de acontecimientos de actualidad en el paÃs y en el extranjero. Lo que distinguió el trabajo de estos periodistas fue su esfuerzo por "imaginar" las noticias, por transportar a los lectores imaginativamente a los acontecimientos descritos. Aunque algunos la criticaron por su sensacionalismo, la correspondencia especial acercó al mundo, redujo el espacio y el tiempo y ayudó a crear nuestra cultura informativa moderna. |

This book analyses the significance of the special correspondent as a new journalistic role in Victorian print culture, within the context of developments in the periodical press, throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. Examining the graphic reportage produced by the first generation of these pioneering journalists, through a series of thematic case studies, it considers individual correspondents and their stories, and the ways in which they contributed to, and were shaped by, the broader media landscape. While commonly associated with the reportage of war, special correspondents were in fact tasked with routinely chronicling all manner of topical events at home and abroad. What distinguished the work of these journalists was their effort to 'picture' the news, to transport readers imaginatively to the events described. While criticised by some for its sensationalism, special correspondence brought the world closer, shrinking space and time, and helping to create our modern news culture. |
