Este libro examina las consecuencias de la segregación educativa desde la perspectiva de la cohesión social. Investiga el impacto de la separación de los estudiantes según lÃneas socioeconómicas en las actitudes, disposiciones y perspectivas de los estudiantes consideradas importantes para la cohesión social, asà como en el rendimiento, abriendo la discusión sobre los costos sociales de la segregación escolar. La separación de los estudiantes según su origen social es una caracterÃstica común de la escolarización en muchos sistemas modernos. Esto no se debe sólo a la influencia de la segregación residencial sino también a los efectos de las polÃticas que promueven la privatización de la educación, la elección de los padres y la selección académica de los estudiantes. Al reconocer la importancia de la escolarización para la ciudadanÃa y la integración social, los capÃtulos de este libro exploran cómo la separación de los estudiantes a lo largo de su vida escolar puede contribuir a la división de los ciudadanos más allá de la escuela, y cómo la segregación social en los sistemas escolares afecta la cohesión social de manera más amplia. Al explorar el caso de Santiago, Chile, el estudio es una contribución oportuna a la comprensión de las raÃces de la división social y el papel que desempeñan las escuelas en la creación de sociedades cohesivas. La originalidad del enfoque y la evidencia presentada se basan en implicaciones que deberÃan ser de interés para una audiencia más amplia preocupada por las discusiones contemporáneas sobre la solidaridad y su erosión por la segregación educativa en entornos urbanos. . |

This book examines the consequences of educational segregation from the perspective of social cohesion. It investigates the impact of separating students along socioeconomic lines on student attitudes, dispositions and outlooks considered important for social cohesion as well as on achievement, opening the discussion about the social costs of school segregation. The separation of students based on their social background is a common feature of schooling in many modern systems. This is not only due to the influence of residential segregation but also to the effects of policies promoting educational privatisation, parental choice and student academic selection. By recognising the importance of schooling for citizenship and social integration, the chapters in this book explore how the separation of students throughout their school lives can contribute to the division of citizens beyond school, and how social segregation in school systems affect social cohesion more broadly. By exploring the case of Santiago, Chile, the study is a timely contribution to the understanding of the roots of social division and the role that schools play in creating cohesive societies. The originality of the approach and the evidence presented draw on implications that should be of interest to a wider audience concerned with contemporary discussions on solidarity and its erosion by educational segregation in urban environments. . |
