Los avances recientes en ciencia y tecnología han hecho posible conectar e integrar sin problemas varios elementos de los sistemas de ingeniería y han abierto la puerta a innovaciones que han transformado la forma en que vivimos y trabajamos. Si bien estos desarrollos han producido una mayor eficiencia y numerosas mejoras en nuestras prácticas actuales, los problemas causados por la mayor complejidad de estos sistemas integrados pueden ser extremadamente difíciles. En consecuencia, resolver estos problemas implica aplicar conocimientos interdisciplinarios para abordar la heterogeneidad de los diversos elementos inherentes al sistema.
