Este libro describe el improbable desarrollo de la astrofÃsica en España, en comparación con la última década del gobierno de Franco y la transición del paÃs a la democracia. El autor, director fundador del Instituto de AstrofÃsica de Canarias de España, ofrece un relato de primera mano de su propia odisea y la de otros en el establecimiento de este campo en la España de Franco, mostrando cómo en apenas medio siglo, España fue capaz de transformarse de un remanso cientÃfico a un actor mundial en astronomÃa y astrofÃsica. El libro es una descripción detrás de escena, con sus defectos y todo, de cómo se hace la gran ciencia, mostrando las motivaciones (a veces tan entretenidas como exasperantes) que impulsan a las instituciones cientÃficas y a los cientÃficos que trabajan para ellas. Muchos astrónomos, tanto profesionales como aficionados, e historiadores conocen el gran trabajo cientÃfico que se está realizando en España, pero hay muy poca información publicada disponible sobre la compleja historia que subyace al mismo. Esta edición en inglés ahora hace que esa historia sea accesible para el lector no especializado. Con su narrativa informal pero cautivadora, el libro es una contribución poco común e inspiradora a la historia de la astrofÃsica, la polÃtica cientÃfica, la educación y la divulgación. |

This book describes the unlikely development of astrophysics in Spain, set against the final decade of Franco's rule and the country's transition to democracy. The author, Founding Director of Spain's Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, gives a firsthand account of his own and others' odyssey in establishing the field in Franco's Spain, showing how in a mere half-century, Spain was able to transform from a scientific backwater to a world player in astronomy and astrophysics. The book is a behind-the-scenes, warts-and-all depiction of how Big Science gets done, showing the motivations—sometimes as entertaining as they are infuriating—that drive scientific institutions and the scientists who work for them. Many astronomers, both professional and amateur, and historians know of the great scientific work being done in Spain, but there is very little published information available about the complex story underlying it. This English edition now makes that story accessible for the lay reader. With its casual, yet captivating narrative, the book is a rare and inspiring contribution to the history of astrophysics, science policy, education and outreach. |
