Este volumen pretende restablecer la gerontología social como una disciplina que tiene vínculos pragmáticos con la política y la práctica. En conjunto, los capítulos enriquecen los debates públicos sobre las cuestiones morales, culturales y económicas que rodean el envejecimiento, mejorando así los "problemas" asociados con las sociedades que envejecen. Este volumen es excepcionalmente transcultural, teórico e interdisciplinario. Llena un vacío en los estudios gerontológicos del sur global que es predominantemente descriptivo y empírico. Basado en investigaciones originales, este volumen examina en particular la cuestión sociológica de la desigualdad y su intersección con la edad, el género, la salud, la familia y las relaciones sociales. En el proceso, los estudios aquí resaltan los sistemas históricos, institucionales y sociales únicos que gobiernan la experiencia subjetiva del envejecimiento en diversos contextos a nivel mundial. Específicamente, se estudian sociedades en transición, incluidas India, Líbano, Nigeria, Japón, China, Israel y Europa, conectando la experiencia microsocial del envejecimiento (soledad, bienestar, discriminación, relaciones y resiliencia) con contextos temporales y políticos más amplios. Este ejercicio genera capital intelectual que reformula los vínculos entre la investigación y las políticas sobre el envejecimiento de manera innovadora. En general, el volumen se hace eco del compromiso científico global de comprender el proceso sociocultural del envejecimiento en sociedades en transición y utiliza ricas oportunidades para la fertilización cruzada de ideas, disciplinas y métodos para promover la promesa gerontológica de la investigación, la formación y la práctica críticas. |
