Ofrece una perspectiva innovadora sobre este aspecto que, aunque generalizado, no siempre es reconocido por sus usuarios como de naturaleza compleja y multidimensional, firmemente arraigado en normas culturales, sociales y disciplinarias, y difícil de medir. La competencia dentro del mercado mundial de la educación superior se ha vuelto cada vez más intensa entre las universidades; y el sector de la educación superior en China, actualmente la mayor fuente de estudiantes internacionales, está comenzando a competir fuertemente por su mercado interno. En este contexto consumista, la participación de los estudiantes, con su estrecha relación con los resultados positivos del aprendizaje, está recibiendo cada vez más atención por parte de los administradores e investigadores de la educación superior que buscan mejorar la calidad de sus "productos". El estudio de investigación en el que se basa el libro se basa en tres cursos, dos en China y uno en el Reino Unido. Ofrece una perspectiva binaria a través de dos culturas muy diferentes (occidental y confuciana) y dos áreas temáticas muy diferentes (lengua china y matemáticas). El estudio emplea un diseño de métodos mixtos y desarrolla un marco conceptual derivado del análisis estadístico y temático. Una lente teórica original, que combina una perspectiva bioecológica (Bronfenbrenner) y una sociocultural (Figured Worlds de Holland et al.), añade un mayor poder interpretativo para ayudar a comprender el constructo de la participación estudiantil. Competition within the global higher education market has become increasingly intense amongst universities; and the higher education sector in China, currently the largest source of international students, is beginning to compete strongly for its home market. Against this consumerist background, student engagement, with its close relation to positive learning outcomes, is increasingly receiving attention from higher education managers and researchers who seek to improve the quality of their 'products'. The research study on which the book is based draws on three courses, two in China and one in the UK. It offers a binary perspective across two very different cultures (Western and Confucian) and two very different subject areas (Chinese language and mathematics). The study employs a mixed-methods design and develops a conceptual framework derived from statistical and thematic analysis. An original theoretical lens, combining a bioecological perspective (Bronfenbrenner) and a sociocultural one (Holland et al.'s Figured Worlds), adds further interpretive power to help understand the construct of student engagement.
