Este volumen explora las reacciones crÃticas y el activismo disidente generado en el verano de 1968 cuando el Papa Pablo VI promulgó su tan esperada y enormemente divisiva encÃclica, Humanae Vitae, que prohibÃa el uso de "anticonceptivos artificiales" por parte de los católicos. A través de estudios de caso comparativos de catorce paÃses europeos diferentes, ofrece una gran cantidad de datos nuevos sobre las creencias y prácticas religiosas vividas por la gente común –asà como por los teólogos que cuestionan las "enseñanzas tradicionales"- en áreas relacionadas con el amor, el matrimonio, la vida familiar y el género. roles e intimidad conyugal. Los temas clave incluyen el papel de los expertos médicos, los medios de comunicación, las estrategias del clero y los laicos católicos progresistas y el papel fundamental que desempeñan las relaciones enormemente diferentes entre la Iglesia y el Estado. Al demostrar la importante (y pasada por alto) contribución de la Iglesia católica a la remodelación del panorama sexual de la Europa de posguerra, realiza una intervención crÃtica en una creciente historiografÃa que explora la década de 1960 y ofrece un interrogatorio detallado de una corriente de cambio religioso en este tumultuoso década. |

This volume explores the critical reactions and dissenting activism generated in the summer of 1968 when Pope Paul VI promulgated his much-anticipated and hugely divisive encyclical, Humanae Vitae, which banned the use of 'artificial contraception' by Catholics. Through comparative case studies of fourteen different European countries, it offers a wealth of new data about the lived religious beliefs and practices of ordinary people – as well as theologians interrogating 'traditional teachings' – in areas relating to love, marriage, family life, gender roles and marital intimacy. Key themes include the role of medical experts, the media, the strategies of progressive Catholic clergy and laity, and the critical part played by hugely differing Church-State relations. In demonstrating the Catholic church's important (and overlooked) contribution to the refashioning of the sexual landscape of post-war Europe, it makes a critical intervention into a growing historiography exploring the 1960s and offers a close interrogation of one strand of religious change in this tumultuous decade. |
