Le preocupa especialmente identificar si hubo una experiencia escocesa distintiva y, de ser así, qué efecto tuvo en Oriente. ¿Los escoceses trajeron diferentes habilidades a Asia y en qué medida sus antecedentes los prepararon de diferentes maneras? ¿Fueron sus redes distintivas en comparación con otras etnias? ¿Cuál fue el atractivo de Asia para ellos? ¿Realmente superaron su peso como pensaban algunos contemporáneos, o fue simplemente retórica exagerada?
