Este libro considera a la Unión Europea como un proyecto con un importante objetivo antidiscriminación, que es importante recordar en un momento de creciente resentimiento contra grupos particularmente expuestos, especialmente inmigrantes, refugiados, miembros de minorÃas étnicas o religiosas y personas LGBTI. Si bien la igualdad y la no discriminación han sido durante mucho tiempo principios fundamentales de la comunidad internacional en su conjunto, como lo demuestran la Carta de las Naciones Unidas y la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos, han dado forma a la integración europea de una manera particular. Los conceptos de diversidad, pluralismo e igualdad siempre han sido inherentes a ese proceso, y la UE se basa prácticamente en los valores de igualdad y no discriminación. La Carta de los Derechos Fundamentales de la UE contiene el catálogo más moderno y extenso de motivos de discriminación prohibidos, que complementa el catálogo consagrado en el Convenio Europeo de Derechos Humanos. La legislación de la UE ha dado nuevos impulsos a la legislación antidiscriminatoria tanto dentro como fuera de Europa. Las contribuciones a este libro se centran en cuán eficaz y creÃble ha sido la UE en la lucha contra la discriminación dentro y fuera de Europa. Los autores presentan diferentes aspectos (en su mayorÃa legales) de ese tema y los examinan desde diversos ángulos intra y extra europeos. |
