La relación histórica entre las lenguas catalana y occitana tuvo un impacto definitivo en la identidad lingüística de la poderosa Corona de Aragón y el emergente Imperio español. Basándose en una gran cantidad de documentos históricos, tratados lingüísticos y textos literarios, este libro ofrece nuevos conocimientos sobre las fuerzas políticas y culturales que dieron forma a las identidades nacionales en la Península Ibérica y, en consecuencia, en las zonas vecinas del Mediterráneo durante la Edad Media y la Edad Moderna. Período. El enfoque textual innovador adoptado en estas páginas expone las formas multifacéticas en las que se disputaron las fronteras entre las lenguas más prestigiosas de la región y demuestra cómo las identidades lingüísticas estaban vinculadas a las luchas en curso por el poder político. Como revela el análisis, la construcción ideológica del occitano jugaría un papel crucial en la construcción de un catalán unificado y el catalán, a su vez, daría lugar a un ferviente debate en torno al idioma "español" que ha perdurado hasta nuestros días.
