Explorando el lado oscuro de la naturaleza animal y la "otredad" de los animales tal como los ven los humanos, y empleando teorías de vanguardia sobre animales no humanos, ecocrítica y teoría literaria y cultural, este libro lleva el género gótico a un nuevo territorio. Después de la difusión de las teorías de la evolución de Darwin, la ficción del siglo XIX rápidamente retomó la idea del "animal interior". Aquí, el miedo explorado era el de una animalidad rebelde, desafiante, degenerada y completamente amoral que yacía (en su mayor parte) latente dentro de todos nosotros. Sin embargo, los humanos y los no humanos también tienen otros tipos de encuentros, e incluso antes de Darwin, los humanos a menudo han tenido una relación incómoda con los animales que, como dice Donna Haraway, tienen una manera de "mirarnos hacia atrás". En este libro, la atención no se centra en el "animal interior" sino más bien en el animal "exterior": otro y completamente incomprensible. Ruth Heholt es profesora titular de inglés en la Universidad de Falmouth. Ha publicado ampliamente sobre temas góticos, criminales, de género y sobrenaturales.
