Este volumen de acceso abierto proporciona por primera vez una descripción exhaustiva y una evaluación científica de los hallazgos arqueológicos submarinos que se refieren a la ocupación humana de la plataforma continental alrededor de las costas de Europa y el Mediterráneo cuando los niveles del mar eran más bajos que los actuales. Se trata del mayor conjunto de hallazgos submarinos del mundo, con más de 2.500 lugares de hallazgos, que van desde herramientas de piedra individuales hasta pueblos submarinos con condiciones de conservación únicas. El material analizado aquí abarca desde el Paleolítico Inferior hasta la Edad del Bronce y cubre 20 países que bordean las principales cuencas marinas desde las costas atlánticas de Irlanda y Noruega hasta el Mar Negro, y desde el Báltico occidental hasta el Mediterráneo oriental. Los hallazgos de cada país se presentan en su contexto arqueológico, con información sobre la historia del descubrimiento, las condiciones de preservación y visibilidad, su relación con los cambios regionales en el nivel del mar y la geomorfología costera, y los arreglos institucionales para su investigación y protección. Las introducciones editoriales resumen los hallazgos de cada una de las principales cuencas marinas. También hay una sección final con una discusión extensa de los antecedentes históricos y los marcos legales y regulatorios que informan la gestión del patrimonio cultural subacuático y la colaboración entre industrias marinas, arqueólogos y agencias gubernamentales. El volumen se basa en el trabajo de COST Action TD0902 SPLASHCOS, una red de investigación multidisciplinaria y multinacional apoyada por la organización COST (Cooperación Europea en Ciencia y Tecnología) financiada por la UE.
