Este libro presenta una visión general de la investigación sociolingüística en Inglaterra. Los capítulos, que muestran avances en la teoría, el método y la aplicación de la sociolingüística, examinan temas sociolingüísticos en diferentes niveles lingüísticos y en diferentes áreas geográficas de todo el país. Al permitir al lector involucrarse en la investigación contemporánea en el campo, cada capítulo es único en el tema o área geográfica explorada. Los temas incluyen sociolingüística histórica, lengua de signos británica, variación léxica, cambios en la duración de la vida y variación e innovación en áreas urbanas y periféricas; mientras que las regiones cubiertas van desde Cornwall hasta West Cumbria.
